Kyle Walsh, PhD, is the Director of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS) and the National Toxicology Program (NTP). As part of the National Institutes of Health, NIEHS is the world’s premier biomedical research organization dedicated to understanding how environmental exposures affect human health. Walsh oversees the institute’s nearly $1 billion annual budget, advancing a broad portfolio of cutting-edge environmental health research.

A renowned neuro-epidemiologist, Walsh previously led groundbreaking research at Duke University examining how genetic, epigenetic, and environmental factors interact to influence brain health, cancer risk, aging, and disease. His work on glial senescence and gliomagenesis has provided critical insights into the relationship between environmental exposures, biological aging, and human health outcomes.

At Duke, Walsh served as Associate Professor of Neurosurgery, Pathology, Population Health Sciences, and Pediatrics; Director of the Division of Neuro-epidemiology; and co-leader of the Neuro-Oncology Research Program at the Duke Cancer Institute. He holds bachelor’s degrees in molecular genetics and anthropology from The Ohio State University, a PhD in chronic disease epidemiology from the Yale School of Public Health, and completed postdoctoral training at the University of California, San Francisco.
