Who Owns Poverty? A Radical Shift from Aid to Action

EVENT

Event Details

What if everything we thought we knew about poverty was wrong? For decades, experts have tried to solve poverty from the top down, yet it persists. Dr. Martín Burt, world-renowned social entrepreneur and microfinance pioneer, argues that families and communities hold the power to lift themselves out of poverty.

In this talk, Dr. Burt introduces the Poverty Stoplight, a revolutionary methodology that fires the 'experts' and puts families in charge of their own destinies. Families examine their unique challenges across six key areas and create individualized road maps to improving their overall well-being. Discover how shifting from aid to action is helping millions around the world do the unthinkable: eliminate poverty for good. The Poverty Stoplight is currently being implemented by more than 583,000 families and 1000 organizations in 60 countries.

Dr. Burt is the founder and CEO of Fundación Paraguaya (1985), a social enterprise named Latin America’s most impactful and innovative development organization by the Inter-American Development Bank. In public service, he has served as Chief of Staff to the President of Paraguay, was elected Mayor of the capital city of Paraguay, Asunción, and was appointed Vice Minister of Commerce. Dr. Burt has written books on economics, development, municipal government, poetry and education. His latest books are “Who Owns Poverty?” and “Poverty Stoplight: A Practical Step-by Step Guide to Eliminating Poverty in the World.” He holds a PhD from Tulane University and is Distinguished Visiting Professor of Entrepreneurship and Social Innovation at Worcester Polytechnic Institute and a Visiting Professor at the Universidad Francisco Marroquín in Guatemala. Dr. Burt resides with his family in his native Paraguay.

This event is part of the Center for Free Enterprise Menard Family Lecture Series and its Truist Speaker Series. It is free and open to all UofL faculty, staff and students, as well as the community. It is Cardinal Flight approved for College of Business students. Registration is not required. Free pizza will be served to attendees
