The College of Arts & Sciences invites faculty, postdoctoral researchers, staff, and students to the next session of our Interdepartmental Research Seminar Series, an opportunity to discover research across disciplines, exchange ideas, and build new collaborations.
This session features Dr. Maegen Rochner (Geographic & Environmental Sciences) and Dr. Shelby Pumphrey (Women's, Gender & Sexuality Studies and Pan-African Studies), who bring distinct yet complementary perspectives to questions of people, place, and justice.
Dr.Pumphrey will be giving a presentation that explores innovative approaches to teaching reproductive justice in the community-engaged classroom. It focuses on the Community Herbal Gathering, an innovative community-engaged project between Dr.Pumphrey, her students, and local reproductive justice community partners, to highlight key strategies in developing culturally relevant, place-based reproductive justice programming in community settings.
Dr. Rochner will discuss applications of dendrochronology, or tree-ring science, for understanding climate and environmental change and the role of humans in shaping the evolution of forested ecosystems. She will summarize some of these applications within the context of her ongoing and future work and explore how tree rings may inform questions around human-environment interactions and environmental justice across varied landscapes and spatiotemporal scales. Join us to learn and engage in a discussion highlighting two approaches to bringing questions of justice into research across domains using the technical expertise of two world-class scholars.
