SUMMARY:Psychological and Brain Sciences Colloquium: Dr. Alexandra Moussa-T
 ooks

DESCRIPTION:The Anomalous Body and Psychosis Risk: A Biopsychosocial Model\
n\nBodily disturbances have long been identified is schizophrenia-spectrum
disorders and serve as important early disease markers. Understanding how
psychosis may be rooted in early changes in the body (physically and perc
eptually) and how bodily disturbances may drive symptomology is critical f
or understanding the disorder. Dr. Moussa-Tooks will review two new lines
of her work: First, using puberty as a model period of bodily change, she
will show that pubertal development is associated with psychotic-like expe
riences supported by changes in bodily hormones and the brain. Second, she
will describe new work linking changes in the perception of the body duri
ng puberty to the emergence of anomalous experience and psychosis risk. Dr
. Moussa-Tooks will end by reviewing next steps, including building a more
robust biopsychosocial model and considering how these findings support w
hat we know and what we have yet to learn about intervention. \n\nDr. Ale
xandra Moussa-Tooks is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychol
ogical and Brain Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington.
