Workshop Background
The University of Louisville is committed to embracing and fostering diverse, multicultural faculty who bring a broad range of experiences and breadth of viewpoints that underlie the vigor and creative endeavors of the academy. While university policy mandates fairness in hiring, the effectiveness of such a policy relies on the faculty (both on search committees and all the faculty members of each department), chairs and deans to learn, understand, and proactively follow guidelines that enhance hiring the best candidates.
Such an effective set of guidelines is provided in a newly developed faculty recruiting and hiring handbook, which will be shared with the university community and should be reviewed prior to the start of, and during all faculty searches. This handbook, developed by the Strategies and Tactics for Recruiting to Improve Diversity and Excellence (STRIDE) Committee, describes best practices to aid in the promotion of diversity, equity, and inclusion across each stage of the faculty search process to produce diverse candidate pools, run effective searches, and attract and choose the best candidates.
These sessions will educate search committees about the new search and recruitment guidelines described in the new STRIDE handbook - to be shared soon - and equip members with evidence based practices to ensure that the search and recruitment process is equitable, consistent with, and conducive to our strategic goals.
