Violence and Mortuary Landscapes: An Archaeological and Ethnographic Study of Eastern Cemetery (Louisville, KY)

In this free public talk, Drs. Angela Storey, Ashley Smallwood, Katy Marklein, and Tom Jennings (all from the University of Louisville's Department of Anthropology) will discuss their ongoing research into Louisville's Eastern Cemetery.

How are histories of violence reproduced and reinscribed within the landscape of urban cemeteries? How can approaches from across anthropology’s varied sub-disciplines – archaeology, biological anthropology, and cultural anthropology – help us understand the past, present, and future of cemeteries? In this research we examine the current abandonment and past over-burying of Eastern Cemetery, located in central Louisville. We argue for the need to see the past and present as deeply entwined and examine how what we know about the past is crafted through the lens of the present. In this talk, we explore preliminary findings from two years of surface and subsurface surveying and ethnographic data collection.

This event is presented by the Kentucky Society of the Archaeological Institute of America, with support from the University of Louisville Departments of Anthropology and History.
