Come learn about the local history of the Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery, one of the oldest African American cemeteries in Louisville!

During this event, UofL graduate and undergraduate students will present their research on the historical cemetery. Throughout the semester student groups in the Intro to Public Humanities course conducted research on the histories of the cemetery, the Newburg community, and other local Black cemeteries. They will present their findings at the event.

You will also hear from community members and collaborators who have worked on related projects connected to the cemetery. The Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery Committee will discuss their decades-long effort to financially support, preserve and upkeep the cemetery. UofL anthropologists will discuss the mapping of the cemetery and their work conducting geophysical surveys to locate missing headstones and unmarked graves. A UofL student will present on the genealogy research she conducted on her ancestors buried in the Petersburg-Newburg Cemetery.

Please come out and support this endeavor. Refreshments will be served after the presentations.
