PLAN Workshop: The Teaching Toolbox
Description. Are you a graduate teaching assistant who will be leading a class for the first time this fall? Want to make sure you’ve remembered everything you need to get started? Worried about how to help students learn what they’re supposed to learn? Come to this practical, hands-on, 4-hour workshop that will review the basics of getting started in your teaching career as a graduate teaching assistant. This workshop will help you think through your checklist of “to dos," active learning and classroom assessment, and working towards the goals of your class. Participants should come prepared with a syllabus and any materials they’ve collected to teach their class this year. Feel free to bring your laptop or any technology tools to keep you productive. By the end of the session you should be and feel better prepared for the year!
Learning Outcomes.
1. Outline a checklist of “to dos” to make sure they are ready to begin the semester
2. Identify active learning techniques and classroom assessment techniques (CATs) that they will incorporate into their class
3. Diagram a path for meeting their course goals
4. Feel more comfortable in beginning teaching
