PLAN Workshop: Inclusive Teaching for Graduate Students

An important aspect of teaching is to enhance student’s learning while also ensuring that students feel like a part of the classroom community. Creating an inclusive community within your classroom can often feel daunting and uncomfortable. In this workshop, participants will recognize apprehensions they have about inclusive teaching and learn the roles that both teacher and student identity can play in a classroom setting. Participants will then engage with examples of identity-centered active learning and work as a team to create an example of their own. Additionally, this session will provide helpful instruction for how to develop an inclusive class environment and tangible resources with information about designing an inclusive curriculum.

Learning Outcomes:

Students will 1. Think critically about how academic and personal identity of teachers and students coexist in a classroom setting. 2. Discuss ways to honor identity in the classroom. 3. Generate and share examples of identity-centered active learning exercises. 4. Navigate resources related to academic identity, accessible media implementation, and active learning that can be used when TAing lab courses, guest lecturing, or other graduate level teaching opportunities.

Facilitators:

Megan Norris and Lauren Girouard-Hallam are doctoral students in the Experimental Psychology program at the University of Louisville. Megan and Lauren both research how children think and learn about the world around them, including understanding of how social interactions shape children’s beliefs. Together, they have created a series of talks that provide practical learning resources to undergraduate students and fostered an educational ethos around diversity in the classroom through external trainings. Inspired by EdX’s Inclusive STEM Teaching Course, Megan and Lauren have developed an Inclusive Teaching training that has been utilized by student groups at the University of Louisville.
