Description.  The School of Interdisciplinary and Graduate Studies (SIGS) would like to invite graduate students either interested in or currently teaching to participate in a series of six discussion-based sessions on how to navigate their own and their students’ diversity identities in academic settings (classrooms, mentoring, etc).  Students who participate in 5/6 sessions will receive a certificate from SIGS acknowledging their commitment to self-exploration and understanding of diversity in academia.

Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Evaluate the implications of whether to correct students about their microaggressions

2. Consider student reactions to being corrected about cultural issues in the classroom.

Presenter(s). Stephanie Winkeljohn Black, MEd, is a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program in the College of Education and Human Development. Stephanie is an instructor of a human development and learning course at the undergraduate and masters level, and oversees the curriculum design of the undergraduate course. Stephanie’s research focuses on college student drinking behaviors and young adult and adolescent depression.
