Description. The workshop will briefly review the foundation of the IRB and the protection of human subjects in research. The presenter will discuss the three levels of IRB submissions that include exempt, expedited, and full board review. The issues of informed consent and risk/benefit analysis will also be included in the presentation. Attendees will have opportunities to ask questions pertaining to personal research interest and IRB expectations at the end of the presentation.

Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, participants will be able to:

1. Identify important elements of the IRB process

2. Describe strategies to effectively navigate the IRB process

Presenter(s). Dr. Peter M. Quesada is a Professor of Mechanical Engineering at the University of Louisville. He received his B.S. Degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Texas, and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Bioengineering from the University of California. Dr. Quesada's background includes research affiliations during his graduate studies with the Rehabilitation Research and Development Services of Veterans Affairs Medical Center in San Francisco and the Department of Orthopaedics at the U.S. Naval Hospital in Oakland. After completing graduate studies, he worked one year as a Senior Research Associate Engineer in the Ohio State University Gait Analysis Laboratory and the last three years as an assistant professor in the Division of Orthopaedics in the Biomedical Engineering Center.
