Description. Teachers often struggle with how to address culturally insensitive comments – termed microaggressions - in the classroom. This workshop serves to introduce teachers to the concept of microaggressions and how it impacts their students. You will be given an opportunity to reflect on your own cultural identities and assumptions about diversity in the classroom. You will also be provided with empirically based strategies for how to address microaggressive statements in the classroom.

Learning Outcomes. As a result of this session, participants will be able to: 

1. Describe and identify microaggressive statements.

2. Describe the impact of microaggressive statements on the classroom environment.

3. Increase your awareness of your cultural identities and assumptions about culture.

4. Consider how your identities and assumptions impact your classroom environment.

5. Learn techniques for handling microaggressive statements during class discussion.

Presenter(s). Stephanie Winkeljohn Black, M.Ed., is a doctoral candidate in the Counseling Psychology program in the College of Education and Human Development. Stephanie is an instructor of a human development and learning course at the undergraduate and masters level, and oversees the curriculum design of the undergraduate course. Stephanie’s research focuses on college student drinking behaviors and young adult and adolescent depression.
