"Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica," first edition, 1687

The 1687 first edition of Sir Isaac Newton’s Philosophiae naturalis principia mathematica, annotated on the errata page in the hand of the author, is part of the William Marshall Bullitt Collection of Rare Mathematics and Astronomy and one of the chief treasures of Archives and Special Collections.

Last year concerns for its preservation led Archives and Special Collections curators to make the difficult decision to restrict access other than occasional exhibition.

The Principia, opened to the page with Newton’s annotations, will be in the Pennington Gallery, lower level, east wing of Ekstrom Library, during Archives and Special Collections regular hours with one-time weekend hours on Sunday, September 23 from 2 – 5 pm.
