As part of Open Access Week 2018, University Libraries will host two special screenings on Belknap and HSC of “Paywall: The Business of Scholarship.” This documentary examines why the profit margins amassed by for-profit publishers in a $25.2 billion industry is often greater than some of the most profitable companies like Apple and concludes that the need for open access to research and science is increasingly essential to securing equality in access to that scholarship and achieving transparency in research and innovation.
The film is approximately an hour long and there will be time at the end for a discussion and Q&A. Sarah Frankel, Open Access and Repository Coordinator and Dwayne Buttler, Endowed Chair for Scholarly Communication for University Libraries, will be present to answer questions and lead the discussion following the screening. Light refreshments will be provided.
