Dr. Sterrett-Hong will present findings from her research on naturally occurring interpersonal resources among LGBTQ+ communities of color, and how they can promote healthy functioning, with regard to both substance use and mental health. Findings from a study on the social networks of young cisgender gay, bisexual, pansexual and otherwise termed sexual minority males will be discussed. In addition, a community-partnered project involving a Combined Ball & Drag Show to promote self-awareness and knowledge of substance use concerns also will be described. Participants will gain a greater understanding of social networks and chosen families as important supports for LGBTQ+ People of Color.
Learning objectives:

Brief Biosketch:
Emma Sterrett-Hong, PhD, (she/her), is the Associate Dean of Equity and Inclusion and Associate Professor in the Kent School of Social Work & Family Science at the University of Louisville. Her research focuses on the impact of societal-structural factors and interpersonal relationships on the health and well-being of underserved youth and young adults, as well as the dissemination of evidence-based psychosocial practices. Her work has been funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice & Delinquency Prevention, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, and the National Institutes of Health. In addition, she is a Licensed Psychologist and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist, and maintains a small family therapy practice.
