The Hite Institute of Art and Design is excited to host a Film Screening and Q&A of the Public Access Show “All Together Now” as well as a clip from band “Yer Girlfriend’s” final performance in 1996
The screening will be followed by a Q&A with David Williams (curator of the Williams Nichols collection and producer of All Together Now) and Laura Shine and Carol Kraemer of Yer Girlfriend.
All Together Now was produced from 1984-1988 by members of GLUE (Gays and Lesbians United for Equality) and aired on Louisville’s Dimension and Storer public access channels. The program mimicked traditional tropes of journalistic media, forming out of an urgency for AIDS awareness and resources. Louisville’s All Together Now allowed local queer organizers access to a broader audience withthe privilege of controlling their own narrative. The screening begins with about 20 minutes of clips from various All Together Now broadcasts.
Active from 1988-1996 (and then some), Yer Girlfriend was a local lesbian folk band whose music became a calling cry and an emotional outlet for the queer community in Louisville at a crucial point in time. They garnered national support for their positive, uplifting, and socially minded tunes, performing at women’s music festivals from Michigan to Florida. Most importantly, their lyrics and performances provided the soundtrack and gathering space for facilitating joy while fighting for Fairness. The screening concludes with about 15 minutes of Yer Girlfriend's "final" performance in 1996.
This event is part of the programming for Hite's exhibition "Not Yet / Always Been: An Archive of Queer Louisville"
