Renovating KMAC Museum: Mission, Architecture, and Industry

Aldy Milliken will offer a case study on the institutional and physical renovation of KMAC Museum in Louisville from a craft museum in crisis into a dynamic contemporary art space that delves into artistic process while prioritizing a new generation of museum visitors. This lecture will provide a thorough look at the 5-year transformation including institutional practice, board chemistry, collection development, programming initiatives, and the challenges and outcomes of restoring an 1850s cast-iron building. Milliken will share the benefits and opportunities for innovation working in a historic urban context with a smaller museum’s budget and timeline.

Aldy Milliken is the Director of KMAC Museum in Louisville, KY.  Until 2012 he was a gallerist based in Stockholm, Sweden.  He collaborated with international artists, curators, and museums through exhibitions, art fairs, and biennales. Originally trained as a studio artist, he was also an educator based in Budapest, Hungary, and Jakarta, Indonesia.
