PLAN Workshop - Managing copyright for your graduate research and beyond

Description. This workshop provides an overview of the challenges and opportunities copyright poses and provides for you as a researcher, particularly regarding your research outputs.

Learning Outcomes. As a result of this workshop participants will be able to: 

1. Learn when to seek appropriate permission to use existing works. 
2. Learn ways you may establish and signal copyright for your own works. 
3. Learn about what research outputs are and are not copyrighted automatically.
 

Presenter(s). 

Dwayne K. Buttler, J.D., holds a faculty appointment as professor with University Libraries. Much of his work and research focuses on the complex relationship of copyright law and licensing to the activities at the core of the university and library’s mission of teaching, learning and scholarly communication. Buttler works with individual faculty members, librarians and administrators to address copyright and scholarly communication issues at U of L and elsewhere. He also teaches mass communication law and intellectual property courses at U of L. As a presenter at regional and national conferences, 

Rachel I. Howard.  She joined the University of Louisville Libraries in 2006 as their inaugural Digital Initiatives Librarian. Based in Archives and Special Collections, She coordinates the digitization, digital presentation, and digital preservation of archival collections and other library resources, managing our Digital Collections contributing to the development and growth of ThinkIR, the University of Louisville's Institutional Repository.

Sarah Frankel. She joined the staff of University Libraries in 2004, working in Technical Services on various cataloging and digital projects, including Electronic Theses and Dissertations. In early 2016, She accepted the newly created position of Open Access and Repository Coordinator for the University of Louisville Libraries. Her primary focuses are coordinating UofL's institutional repository, ThinkIR, and also working with our chair of Scholarly Communication to research and promote open access initiatives and answer copyright questions.
