Marcha con César Chavez

Celebremos la cultura hispana: ¡Marcha con César Chávez!

A commemorative march in honor of students’ dedication to acquiring Spanish as a second language while developing the intellectual traits of a disciplined mind.

n March of 1966, César Chávez led a United Farm Worker’s 300-mile protest march/pilgrimage from Delano to Sacramento. The pilgrimage (peregrinación) or march (marcha) was symbolic of the long struggle ahead. The marcha started with only a few hundred marchers (peregrinos) and ended with 25,000 marching into Sacramento on Easter Sunday.

Through the process-driven unit about César Chávez, University of Louisville Spanish students confront, evaluate, adjust, reevaluate and address the following traits of the undisciplined mind: intellectual disregard for justice, distrust for reason, intellectual self-centeredness, intellectual arrogance and intellectual laziness with the goal of developing traits of a disciplined mind. The study of César Chávez not only provides students with a glimpse of Spanish as a heritage language in the US, but also, facilitates learning that enables students to develop intellectual traits that guide thinking to be fair-minded, demonstrating intellectual humility, autonomy, fair-mindedness, courage, perseverance, empathy, integrity and confidence in reasoning.

As a culminating lesson, students will participate in an on-campus march in honor of César Chávez Day as a hands-on experience to better appreciate the culture and language of the 300-mile march from Delano to Sacramento. At various locations on campus, students will be giving speeches, using primary source material. Along the on-campus route, small groups will sing songs in Spanish that were popular among protesters. The marcha will conclude in front of the UofL Thinker statue to underscore the associations with empowerment, community, culture, liberties, justice and higher education that informed the entire unit.
