Film, Faith, and Fury: How Religious Movies have Riled Believers

At least since the 1932 Hollywood blockbuster, The Sign of the Cross, helped prompt Roman Catholics to form the Legion of Decency, certain religious movies have motivated Christians, Jews, Muslims, and Hindus to prevent the public from watching them.  In this presentation, John Ferré, Professor of Communication, will identify the most controversial religious movies of all time, show the lengths to which religious groups have gone to censure and censor them, discuss legal, industry, and organizational pressures on the production of religious movies, and explain what it is in these movies that the faithful have found so offensive.
