Department of Psychological & Brain Sciences: Colloquium Series: "Context, change, and speech perception"

Context, change, and speech perception: It is impossible for perceptual systems to fully “rebuild the world inside your head”. The world is too complex and perceptual systems are too limited to veridically recover information from the sensory environment. So how do perceptual systems deliver such seemingly rich and detailed streams of information? I will argue that they succeed by focusing on relative changes in stimuli, not absolute stimulus properties. By focusing on what’s changing or unpredictable in the sensory environment, perceptual systems can transmit new, unpredictable information that can guide adaptive behavior. I will discuss data from our lab that illustrates how speech perception relies on acoustic changes in the speech signal, and how this has broad impact for perception in healthy and impaired hearing.
